"Sixteen-year-old physics nerd Aysel is obsessed with plotting her own death. With a mother who can barely look at her without wincing, classmates who whisper behind her back, and a father whose violent crime rocked her small town, Aysel is ready to turn her potential energy into nothingness.
There’s only one problem: she’s not sure she has the courage to do it alone. But once she discovers a website with a section called Suicide Partners, Aysel’s convinced she’s found her solution: a teen boy with the username FrozenRobot (aka Roman) who’s haunted by a family tragedy is looking for a partner.
Even though Aysel and Roman have nothing in common, they slowly start to fill in each other’s broken lives. But as their suicide pact becomes more concrete, Aysel begins to question whether she really wants to go through with it. Ultimately, she must choose between wanting to die or trying to convince Roman to live so they can discover the potential of their energy together. Except that Roman may not be so easy to convince."
**Trigger warning for suicide with this book**
This book is a Young Adult depression/romance novel by first time author Jasmine Warga. It is set in America where two teens, Aysel and Roman want to commit suicide, they both join a website where people advertise for suicide partners and decide to kill themselves on April 7th, exactly one year after a tragic event that happened in Romans life. Which gives them less than a month to live, the book starts on the 12th March and each chapter starts with telling you how many days are left.
Aysel refers to her depression as a black slug, that takes away all the happiness and joy she could have. The author has an amazing way with words, and talks extremely honestly about suicide. "If I know anything about depression, this is what I know: It is impossible to escape".
Roman needs Aysel to pretend to be his friend, so his mum will let him out the house long enough to kill himself. Over the past year his parents don't let him leave the house for long periods of time, took away his driving privileges and even checking on him in the middle of the night.
Together they form a true friendship and this is what keeps the book from being too upsetting. Aysel has a great sense of humour, eventually thinking long and hard about depression and growing with the story. Roman was worried all along that Aysel would become a 'flake' and not want to die with him, and when she eventually realises that she has changed her mind, she hopes she can change his too.
It is an intense book that deals with lots of heavy issues, but it is also funny and inspiring at the same time. It is also a story of light and hope and I loved it!
